B.R.I.D.G.E.S. VOL. 1

With SAHRA HUBY

JUNE 29TH, 14:00-17:00

WHAT IS B.R.I.D.G.E.S.?

B.R.I.D.G.E.S is a bi-monthly series of laboratories giving artists an opportunity to share their research with a group of colleagues and build connections with the artistic community in the process. B.R.I.D.G.E.S. is a counterproposal to classical Profitraining, with flat hierarchies, and an exchange of ideas. B.R.I.D.G.E.S. is a space where we can learn together, from each other, in a multidirectional, supportive, and mutually beneficial way.

In B.R.I.D.G.E.S VOL. 1, Sahra Huby proposes a structure to explore and exchange dance practices and tools. How do we improvise? How do we "instant-compose" a dance? How do we frame our dances? How do we talk about it? How do words influence the way we dance? As well as the way we look at dance?

Together we will establish a tool library for improvisation, collecting from each participants practices to create a shared toolbox.

From there, we will explore how to play with the words we use to communicate our actions in dance and performance. How do we describe what we are doing? What elements do we talk about? Can we name not only what we are doing but also all the potentialities of it? How does using words to label our actions influence the experience of the viewer.

DO YOU FEEL ALONE IN THIS CITY OF SOLOS?

DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO SHARE BUT DON’T KNOW HOW?

ARE YOU TIRED OF THE COMPETITIVE ATTITUDE IN THE PERFORMANCE SCENE?

PAUL HAS YOUR BACK.

HOW DID B.R.I.D.G.E.S. COME ABOUT?

We are consistently inspired by the artists and audiences that we have connected with through PAUL. The wonderful feedback we have received through The Wall Series has shown us us there is a great need for this sort of support in Berlin.

This has inspired us to think: Not only do we want to support artists in showing existing work, but we also wish to establish a network that supports artists in sharing their artistic research and findings with colleagues.

It can be very difficult to spur interest in your workshop or laboratory ideas if you are new to the scene in Berlin. So we feel that the Berlin Performance Off-Scene is in need of a Robin Hood of sorts. Someone who gathers the outlaws and pariahs (you, us, the Off-Scene) and builds a powerful and unified group! And who could that Robin Hood be, if not our dearest PAUL?

HOW DOES B.R.I.D.G.E.S. WORK?

Similar to The Wall Series, B.R.I.D.G.E.S. will function through an open call system, so that artists are not chosen based on “who they know”, but what they would like to share. Through each open call, a facilitator and their concept will be selected. We will work with the artist to promote their laboratory and invite any and all performing artists to take part in the session. Facilitators will be given opportunity to share their work and build connections with other artists for future collaborations. As we dont want B.R.I.D.G.E.S. to function as a workshop with a “Teacher” and “Students”, we do not feel that an exchange of money would feel appropriate. Facilitators will receive a symbolic fee of 50 euros, and participation is free of cost.

HOW DO I APPLY TO BE A FACILITATOR FOR B.R.I.D.G.E.S.?

We encourage performing artists to send us their research interests, laboratory concepts, and expectations by answering our application questions. In addition we would like to see a video of your movement material. This can be either in rehearsal/research or in performance. We are open to any proposals, as long as they function while working with a heterogenous group of performing/moving artists and that they can be realized in the span of one 3 hour session.

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS TO FACILITATE VOL. 1: May 3rd

Please send us your application filling out the form you find below!
